Why Companies Perform Random Drug Testing

Perhaps the most controversial of all drug testing is random drug testing. Employers have the legal authority to request a random drug test if they have reasonable suspicion or not. Many companies have implemented a drug testing policy completely random. This practice can be likened to a lottery. If your name is selected, then it's your turn to random drug tests, the employee may have little or no notice in these cases.

Employers often exercise their rights to administer random drug tests as a way of determining whether a worker is a drug, drug abuse in the workplace is often blamed for the problems of absenteeism, health and accidents at work. Although many companies already require pre-employment drug screenings, many claim that random drug testing is more effective in finding drug users in their workforce. With a drug test prior to employment, the employee usually has at least a couple of hours notice and therefore, may try to take steps to "cheat" the test. Many products are available to help users pass drug tests, the synthetic urine to agents that mask the appearance of a particular drug, various methods for drug users to beat the tests.

Most of the random drug testing is done in places where drug use can be hazardous to the welfare of others. Factories and warehouses are two examples of places that often have policies random drug testing. Forklift drivers under the influence have often been the cause of serious accidents, sometimes fatal, in the workplace. Drug abusers who work with heavy machinery or in an assembly line run the risk of injuries as well. Random drug testing can often produce quick and accurate results. Some employers have drug testing kits available on the site, and a simple swab sample from the mouth can give an immediate positive or negative result.

Despite arguments against random drug testing, employers often stand by its decision to implement this policy. If there is probable cause or not, employers have the right to request drug screening at any time. Is in the best interest of employees to abstain from drug use, whether at work or not. Though privacy advocates suggest that random drug testing is a violation of an employee's right to privacy, the simple fact is that employers may choose this method, if deemed necessary. The debate will probably continue in the future.
