In Satyamev Jayate Aamir deals with female foeticide — and how!

Disbelief, horror, tears, smiles - Aamir Khan called all this among his rapt audience as he did with the sensitive issue of female feticide and bias to the male child in the first episode of Satyamev Jayate on Sunday - without being preachy.

There were many wet eyes among those in the television audience, and many more in homes and offices across India as people took to watch the much anticipated program, which Aamir said in his ads he wanted to replicate the phenomena created by the epic Mahabharat and Ramayana teleserials of yore on Sunday in the morning.

Equipped with well-researched instances and case studies, Aamir the one-and-half-hour program was broadcast on Star Plus and Doordarshan at the same time.

The girl episode stood out as unethical medical practitioners are hand in glove with families wanting to kill the female unborn baby.

He also dispelled the perception among people that female feticide is practiced by rural people, or those who live in small villages with Mitu Khurana's case. She is a doctor who has left home to save her twin daughters of the death of his education in-law's family.

The episode began with the case of Amisha Yagnik of Ahmedabad who said she had to abort her unborn female child six times in eight years, while Parveen Khan, of Brown, Madhya Pradesh, was brutally bitten by her husband on her face for having given birth to a girl a child against his wishes.

Delhi-based doctor, Mitu Khurana was asked by her orthopedic surgeon husband and in-laws to abort her girl twins only after 20 weeks of conceiving.

She said her husband and in-laws "took a wrong step in order to force me to abort," but thanks to his family (father) "I saved my kids," Mitu said in the program.

Her mother-in-law, retired vice-principal of Rohtak School, kicked a baby basket with one of the babies down the stairs. Miraculously, the child was saved.

"My mother-in-law was so against my children, that she tried to kill them even after his birth," she said in the program.

The story of the three women brought tears to host Aamir's eyes as well as that of many in the audience.

According to 2011 census, the rate at which the unborn female child died quantities to kill off 10,00,000 girls a year.

Aamir brought into focus the dangers of female feticide showing village in Khurukshetra in Haryana where marriagable men could not find women to marry as there were no women in that age bracket have left.

He highlighted another danger of female feticide - human trafficking. Virendra Vidrohi, a social activist from Alwar Rajasthan, said thousands of women from poor families in the eastern states it is "sold" in some places in Rajasthan due to starvation of women.

"In the last year, 15,000 women of Bihar, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh were brought and sold there for families. This has led to human trafficking in Rajasthan," he added.

Aamir also strongly stated to the public that the sex of the unborn child depended on the Y chromosome from the father.

"If we worship goddess Durga, why kill unborn children," he said.

Aamir also brought into the program two journalists who carried out sting operation against doctors involved in sex determination in Rajasthan and the case is still pulling in different courts in Rajasthan.

He kept people glued to the program and promised to tell them about the "magic wand" to get rid of the evil practice of female feticide at the end of the show. Pointing the public, he said that it is time to do stand, and everyone should get involved - and now.
