SRK stopped in US again, India slams 'habit'

Amid outrage over actor Shah Rukh Khan two-hour detention in New York City airport, India today said "detention and apology" has become customary with the United States, which can not continue. The Indian ambassador asked to take the matter with Washington. By evening, the U.S. apologized to Khan for "any inconvenience".

Khan, who was on his way to deal with students from Yale University, was detained by immigration officials after he landed in White Plains Airport in a private plane around 12.30 pm local time on Thursday. The airport is 53 km from Manhattan.

Khan was part of a group that included Nita Ambani. All but Khan was cleared immediately. Khan was given immigration clearance after more than two hours after the intervention of the Consulate General of India in New York.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, who is in Moscow for a trilateral with his Russian and Chinese counterparts, reacted strongly, saying the U.S. habit of "detention and apology" will not do.

Source in the ministry said in Delhi, "Repeated trouble for the same person, followed by an authorization for consular intervention and mechanical apology is not appropriate." Khan was stopped at Newark airport in 2009.

According to sources, SRK name was "marked" in the airport system, and officers need the approval of a "senior" authorities before they could release him.

"More than an apology will have to happen," Minister for Foreign Affairs Preneet Kaur said. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla said what happened was "not appropriate".
