Vidya Balan, 34, went from being applauded and appreciated to a sudden low but now she is on top again, there is no sense of apology, only quiet satisfaction. She says that she is much more accepting them today than it ever was that perhaps reflected about her - she can calm down a large angry crowd as easily as turning a bunch of journalists to fans. People who attend celebrity events, and interview movie stars every day noise to have their picture taken with her on their mobile phones after endless hours of waiting. And she graciously obliges every one.

Q. Sujoy Ghosh had two unsuccessful films before he came to you with Kahaani. Why did you take it?
When Balki came to me with a page I had Heyy Baby and Kismat Konnection behind me. Sujoy came to me with a script I do not want to do, but he said that he keep coming to me until I said yes. I thought that he had not returned, but he did, again and again. This idea I liked. He put things together well this time.

Q. You really did a lot management on your own to the shoot in Kolkata. The Kahaani team step back and let you to calm the crowds.
A Security tends to be very strict but if you are beautiful to the people, then they are very sweet. I love people and enjoy talking to them. All I had to do was ask them to shoot us.

Q. What do you draw on when playing a pregnant woman?
A. Being a wife and mother comes easily (Silk was more difficult to do and took a lot from me). I remember taking the local train from VT to Chembur in my college days with a band of friends. There are usually many pregnant women on the train and we used to copy them, so in a way I have practiced it.

Q. As you look back to Silk?
When I asked Milan (Luthria) will be the people say, ladki pagal ho gayi hai (this girl gone mad). While many people have been very encouraging, I had an equal number of people tell me not to sign The Dirty Picture. But to be honest I was more scared for Ishqiya as this was the first time I am out of my comfort zone. And after making the film Milan told me why he wanted me in the film - he thought I would bring respectability to sleaze. I wish he had said that to me before, I would give better performance.

Q. What is your frame of mind now?
A. Happy. Pacific. I was unapologetic about being myself. People probably think that I do not breathe the same air, at least that is the kind of reaction I get.

Q. Are you able to 'now what phase?
A. The proportion of success was enormous, but people have asked me that, even after a page and after No One Killed Jessica. I do not worry about it. If I have to get a movie, I do.

Q. What was especially difficult to accept about yourself?
A. That I was passionately sensitive about everything from being a sensitive and caring and love to someone to be rude or nasty to me or to anyone else. Also, stop waiting for my body to be something other than the way it is.

Q. Do you have personal goals for this year?
A. If you are going to ask me if I was going to get married, the answer is no. I do not have the energy to get married. I want to spend time at home sleeping, reading. I take one day at a time. I am not someone to define my goals.
